Stonybrook Commons Apartments are raising money to build in-home libraries for the 150 children in the community. Here's how you can help!
Studies show that while in middle income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to 1. In low income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children. In The Literary Crisis: False Claims, Real Solutions (1998), by Jeff McQuillan, reports that the biggest predictor of academic success is not race, income, gender, parents’ education or location; it is the presence of books in the home.
$3,000 in donation will be matched by Usborne Books and More at 50%! Help us reach this goal in order to purchase 3 age-appropriate books per child in our community so that they can start their own in-home library.
There are 2 ways you can help build these libraries:
- Purchase books online and 50% of your purchase will be matched and donated in books
- Make a monetary donation and watch your donation get matched thanks to Usborne Books and More
Help us increase literacy in our community and provide the children of Stonybrook Commons the educational materials they deserve! Your donation, whether it be a book or monetary donation, will help these kids in more ways than one.
Stonybrook Commons is owned by Buckingham Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on affordable housing, economic development and arts & culture.
