Rebuilding Together Continues Bordeaux Initiative with Help from Buckingham Foundation

Although we are entering the dog days of summer, Rebuilding Together is still moving as fast as ever, repairing homes in the neighborhoods of Bordeaux. This month, they had the help of some brave volunteers from us, Buckingham Foundation. Together, we completed the demolition of a dilapidated deck at the home of the Benions, on a characteristically hot Nashville summer day.

Mr. and Mrs. Benion have lived in their unique home since 1987. An active Bordeaux resident, you can find Mr. Benion at just about every community meeting and neighborhood event. They took on many of the house projects themselves in earlier years, but after some major health issues and time has gone on, they haven't had the ability to make large repairs. Rebuilding Together will be working over the next month to repair the roof, gutters, and soffits, which all need to be replaced to prevent water and pests from entering the home. But in order for contractors to reach those places, an old deck that had lost its structural integrity needed to be taken out. That was where we came to the rescue! On a day when most would avoid being outside at all, these volunteers put a lot of hard work into taking the structure apart and loading the rotten wood into a dumpster (which was overflowing by the end of the day). Thanks to our efforts, we can now make the repairs the Benions' home needs to be a safe and healthy place to live for many years to come.

Volunteers demolished a decayed deck on the side of the Benions' home to make way for needed gutter and roof repairs

In addition to the demolition, they helped us load a dumpster full of the rotten wood from the deck

We also cut out overgrown weeds and shrubs, planting new perennial flowers along the home

Even in the heat, Buckingham's volunteers were up for the challenge
